BY WAY OF THE SIMPLE AND THE HUMBLE

[BREAKING THE BREAD OF GOD’S WORD] Second Sunday of Advent – C December 6, 2015 BY WAY OF THE SIMPLE AND THE HUMBLE Baruch is certainly one prophet we need in our times. We are robed in mourning and misery in our own ways, too. But that is not the part we need to highlight from him. What we need is the assurance the Lord tells us through him: “For God will show your splendor to all under the heavens.” But there is more reassurance coming from a younger prophet, named Paul: “the one who began a good work in [us] will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” But I reserve the best for last – from the Gospel of Luke. You see, Luke had an eye for details because he was a scientist – a doctor. And what details he tells us today! It was the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar. And Pilate was governor and Philip was tetrarch of this and Lysanias was ruler of that … And you thought that it was all about royalty, huh? His story began with bigwigs...

ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, YOUNG FELLOW?

[BREAKING THE BREAD OF GOD’S WORD] October 11, 2015 28 th Sunday OT_B ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, YOUNG FELLOW? The young man of today’s gospel passage sure knows how to do an interview. He knew the right questions. In fact, he already knew the answer to his questions. To the question “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” the Lord had an easy answer: “Simple, young man! … No killing, no bearing false witness … No stealing … No defrauding   … and (wouldn’t you know it!) Honor your old folks!” The interviewer was not exactly pleased with the answer that after all, he knew all along! “I have observed all this from my youth!” “So what is new?” “Anything else?” First lesson for the day … and it is all about us, not about God! Deep inside, we know what is right. Deep in our hearts, we know the answer. And we know that life is more than just avoiding this or that, or not doing one thing, and refraining from doing another. I remember that as a young brother in se...

SIMPLE GREATNESS

25 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B September 23, 2012 SIMPLE GREATNESS This Sunday is a Sunday marked with schemings and plottings, and secret trips and secret arguments. All three readings speak either of evil men clandestinely ganging up on the “just one” (1 st Reading), or hidden passions from which come “wars and conflicts” and “jealousy and selfish ambition” (2 nd Reading), or the Lord and his disciples going secretly on a journey through Galilee, and disciples quietly, though apparently not discretely, but actually passionately arguing about “who was the greatest” among them! (Gospel). This Sunday, like all other Sundays of the year, have to do with real challenges, real problems, and real people dealing with all too real scenarios of selfishness, greed, and lust for honor and glory. Let us face it! … We, too, go through such selfish antics every once in a while. As the first reading shows us, at times, envy gets the better of us, and, ...
